We've all heard the recent tales of cannibal killers such as Jeffrey Dalmer, the Milwaukee murderer who killed
and ate his seventeen victims. But "anthropophagy" is nothing
new. Some places even considered human flesh a delicacy. Human flesh was
typical fare at the Court of Shih Hu, who ruled the Huns of Northern China
in 334 to 349 AD. Young slave girls would be killed and roasted, their
heads places on golden platters and brought before Shih Hu's honored guests.
Then the steaming platter would be passed around in an almost ritual fashion
as every guest admired the unfortunate woman's beauty. Afterward, of course,
the feasting would begin.
But eating human flesh wasn't uncommon
in China. The delicacy was even served in restaurants until the early ninteenth
century. Hmmmm...something else to worry about when eating in a Chinese
restaurant.
