Colombian Death Squads

© 2004  Bobette Bryan

Colombia certainly won't be a very hot vacation spot this spring The city is becoming renown for it's merciless right wing death squads. On January 8, 1999, these killers gunned down more than 60 people in Northern Colombia on what was to become a three-day killing spree.

Officials claim that during the latest atrocity, 14 people died in San Pablo alone, an impoverished town in the rural Bolivar province. Both males and females were killed, dragged from their homes during the early dawn and mowed down execution-style in the town street. Witnesses claim that the killings were committed by no fewer than 40 heavily-armed men who were members of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, also known as AUC. They are an alliance of several paramilitary gangs and number in the thousands.

Amazingly, these professional thugs, declared an 18-day truce for the Christmas and New Year holidays. However, immediately afterward, the killing started anew when AUC members murdered approximately 48 people during a two-day rampage across the northern provinces of Antioquia and Cesar.
