The History of Embalming

When did Embalming begin and who started it? Well, unsurprisingly, it was probably the Egyptians' invention. Experts believe the custom originated before 4000 BC. After much trial and error, the Egyptians seemed to have perfected the art of human preservation. Many of the mummies that exist even today are remarkably well preserved. Even after nearly 3000 years, the soles of some mummies' feet are still found to be soft and flexible and their facial features intact.

The Egyptians achieved this result through a long ritual that involved, removing the internal organs, including the brain, and totally immersing the body in carbonate of soda. They also injected the corpse with balsams, and filled the chest and abdomen with bituminous and aromatic substances. Afterward, the body was wrapped with layers upon layers of cloth that had been soaked in these chemicals, and more bitumen was added between layers as an extra measure.

Amazingly, the modern method of embalming which is used in the United States and Canada, originated during the American Civil War, 1861-1865. It involves removing blood and gases, as well as the abdominal organs, and injecting a disinfectant fluid into the veins and arteries of the corpse. The organs that were removed are also treated with a disinfectant, and returned to the body. Before the body is sutured, a preservative powder is added to the abdominal cavity.

This method is also widespread in many other developed countries, however, embalming is not widespread in a lot European countries including Ireland. Though it has been catching on in recent years, few Irish funeral homes offer embalming services.
