A Modern Day Witch Hunt?

© 2004  Bobette Bryan

If you practice magic of any sort, you better stay away from Indonesia. No fewer than 153 people have been murdered by a group who are becoming known as the "Indonesian Witch Killers." Indonesia's Justice Minister, Muladi acted to control the witch hysteria by proposing a law against black magic. He seems to be caught up in the nightmare as well, blaming the "sorcerers" themselves for these slayings. He suggests that anyone who openly claims they can kill or hurt others with black magic should be punished. "That would be one way to resolve the witchcraft," says Muladi.

The killers strike at night, killing anyone accused or suspected of sorcery by cutting their throats. Sometimes they even hang the mutilated bodies in trees or toss them in the street for all to see. This ordeal sounds very much like the Salem witch-hunts that took place on the Eastern coast several hundred years ago. Similarly to those dark times, mobs have attacked and killed people suspected of practicing black magic.

The Indonesian Police have arrested more than 100 suspects, but claim that there's no clear motive for the murders other than the witchcraft hysteria.
